The Palacio de Portella, near Palma Cathedral, is reminiscent of the Moorish style, and maintains the identity of the original building.
The complete renovation will create unique, elegant spaces which are also extremely comfortable, luxurious and attractive. The Palacio de Portella has had an exciting history over the centuries. More than 800 years ago, during the period of Muslim rule, this building was known as Hualbelet or Hicolbelet. In 1472 it was visited by Rodrigo de Borja, (later the legendary Pope Borgia), when he stopped over on his journey from Rome to Madrid, bearing the dispensation of Pope Sixtus IV for the marriage of Isabel of Castile to Ferdinand of Aragon. In 1626 it came under the ownership of the Order of Carthusians of Valldemossa, until 1823, when it became a property of the Count of Spain. Today, the building is protected by Palma City Council as a highly-prized heritage site.
The palace immediately strikes one with its beautiful façade and Baroque patio, of immense architectural value and kept in an extremely good state of conservation. The garden – one of the most characteristic features – brings to mind outdoor religious sites, where a great deal of time was spent in meditation and prayer. The apartments have private terraces where residents can enjoy the Mallorcan sunshine all year round.
