Every September, Palma experiences a different kind of night. This year, Nit de l’Art also celebrates three decades as part of the city’s cultural life.

Some nights eventually become part of a city’s identity.

In Palma, one of them arrives every September, when galleries stay open late, museums extend their opening hours and contemporary art leaves its usual spaces to meet the city.

This year, the occasion has an additional significance: Nit de l’Art celebrates its 30th anniversary.

On 19 September, Palma will once again become one great artistic route. A night to step into galleries, discover exhibitions, wander through courtyards, walk through the historic centre and, perhaps, see familiar places from a different perspective.

An idea born in Palma

The story began in September 1996, when gallery owners Pep Pinya and Xavier Fiol, through the Independent Association of Art Galleries of the Balearic Islands, launched an idea that was unusual at the time: bringing Palma’s galleries together and opening them to the public until midnight.

Palma thus became the first city in Europe to celebrate a Nit de l’Art.

What began as an initiative to bring contemporary art closer to the city eventually became one of Mallorca’s most recognisable cultural events.

Thirty years later, something essential remains unchanged: opening doors, exploring the city and making art part of everyday life.

What has changed is everything that has grown around it.

Today, Palma has an artistic scene of its own, bringing together galleries, foundations, museums, artists’ studios and new cultural spaces. An evolution that also reflects a city increasingly connected to design, architecture and contemporary creativity.

The city as a stage

One of the great attractions of Nit de l’Art is precisely that it does not take place in a single location.

The city is part of the experience.

The streets of the historic centre connect galleries and exhibition spaces; centuries-old buildings enter into dialogue with contemporary installations, while courtyards, squares and façades naturally become part of the route.

Step into a gallery. Keep walking. Come across an unexpected work of art. Stop for a while in a square. Continue without knowing exactly which door will be next.

This small ritual brings together artists, gallery owners, collectors, residents and visitors every year.

And you do not need to be an art expert to enjoy it.

Perhaps that is one of the reasons why this night has endured for three decades: for a few hours, art no longer belongs solely to the spaces that exhibit it; it belongs to the city as well.

30 years and a look towards the future

The 2026 edition celebrates three decades of history, while looking towards the future.

Art Palma Contemporani sees this anniversary as a new opportunity to bring contemporary creativity closer to the public, with exhibitions, cultural projects and free guided tours once again taking place across different venues throughout Palma.

Art will also return to public spaces. Plaça de l’Olivar will be part of the celebrations with Nit de l’Art al Carrer, an initiative open to artists, collectives and organisations connected to the visual arts.

There are many ways to discover a city.

Through its architecture.

Its gastronomy.

Its neighbourhoods.

The people who live there.

And also through its culture.

During Nit de l’Art, Palma reveals one of its most interesting sides: that of a Mediterranean city that preserves its history while continuing to engage in a conversation with the contemporary world.

Our recommendation is simple: do not plan too much.

Start at sunset. Walk through the historic centre. Step into a gallery you already know and, above all, one you do not. And let the streets, the exhibitions and an unexpected open door or two shape the route along the way.

Because some of the best ways to discover Mallorca are not necessarily found in a guidebook.

Sometimes, all it takes is a walk through Palma on the right night.
